My experiences

My middle school homeroom teacher was a history teacher. She turned red when she's absorbed in teaching. I think she really likes historical story telling.

Let me tell you about her teaching style. When she is teaching, she didn't give us just information. She told me the story about that historical event. It was comprehensible and also good to remember. And she drew picture on the map for helping storytelling. And she inspired me to like history. Because she loved history and I loved her, therefore I liked history.

As you can see, her teaching style influences my own teaching practice as a positive way. At first, when I'm teaching some subject I try to love that subject. I believe that teacher's passion of that subject will inspire students. So I study that subject first, then I search some interesting things and pick it up. I use that interest things during my teaching.

Second, I try to tell the stories to understandable and connected to real life when I'm teaching history. For example, there is a man who called Seo Hui in the Korean history. Seo Hui is a famous historical figure who was a great diplomat and politician in the early Goryeo Empire. Seo Hui entered government service though the state examination and was promoted quickly. He was soon in charge of a department, which was like today's Ministry of National Defense. He was sent to Song as an envoy. His career gave Seo Hui the ability to understand well international situations. He played an important diplomatic role. His excellent oratory skills were so great that he persuaded the Khitan's 80,000 strong army to retreat from Goryeo. In the history text book, there is only written, "Seo Hui persuaded the Khitan's 80,000 strong army to retreat from Goryeo with his diplomatic oratory". It was hard to understand. Are those 80,000 Khitan's army was fool? Why they just retreated? So I try to answer to those questions. In that time, Goryeo had trade to Song Empire. But Song and Khitan against to each other. Because they have problem with a territorial dispute. So Khitan try to quarantine Song's trade. They asked to Goryeo to don't trade with Song. But Goryeo didn't do that. So Khitan sent 80,000 strong army to Goryeo for territorial aggression. So Seo hui persuade them Goryeo will stop the trade with Song. Khitan got some benefit conclusion, so they retreated. But Goryeo didn't cut the trade to Song, Khitan reinvasion to Goryeo. So I teach them it makes sense.

Third, I try to draw some maps about that historical story. Using geographical information helps to understand. When I explain Goryeo, Song and Khitan, geographical drawing is very useful. Song located present China, Khitan located present Mongolia and Goryeo located present North and South Korea. When I draw those location, students easy to understand why they have problems like these days of Korea-Japan's Dokdo problem.

That's it. She inspired my teaching style as a good way. After I met her, I enjoyed learning history.
